33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time
R. You are my inheritance, O Lord!
Written by Margaret Cressionnie
When we think of an inheritance, we often think of possessions or monetary gain from past generations or family who have gone before us. Often, an inheritance is not something that was earned or something that was worked for but a gift that is given by lineage or relationship alone. As children of God through our baptism, this identity as a child of God fulfills and speaks to our deepest longing in this life, and we rejoice at how God offers the fullness of joy and abundant life here and now. God offers undeserved grace whenever we go to Him, and as members of His family, God extends an eternal inheritance of Heaven through the sacrifice of His Son. God has always desired to give in abundance to His children, and He is mindful to provide us with a richness only He can provide.
The Lord Himself is our inheritance, offering salvation to us all through His sacrifice. This inheritance requires a response from us in the here and now to choose His will as He shows us the path to life. And beyond this life, there are treasures available to us that are far richer than earthly treasures, and His promises are true. Are we mindful of the richness and fullness of joy in what God offers us daily? How can you greater proclaim with the psalmist, ‘You are my inheritance, O Lord!’ and respond to this great gift?
