6th Sunday in Ordinary Time

R. Blessed are they who follow the law of the Lord!

Written by Abraham Salas

Sometimes not following God can look appealing. It can seem easier, or like there would be less work to worry about anything. We wouldn’t be getting up on Sundays, and we could do whatever we want whenever we wanted without a care in the world.

Following Christ can be tough, especially in a world that seems to do everything but follow our Lord. This Psalm is calling people who follow God’s law “Blessed” because of how hard it is to follow the Lord in this world.

Christ has warned us about this. “How narrow the gate and constricted the road that leads to life. And those who find it are few” (Matthew 7:14).

When Jesus told us about the gate being narrow, he wasn’t just talking about getting up on a Sunday to go to Church, although this is still something important that we should all be doing. Jesus was also referring to us falling to sins like lust, greed, gluttony, sloth, wrath, envy, pride, etc. It is so easy to fall into the ways of this world. It is so easy to fall into any of these sins listed above. What is not easy is holiness, yet it is what Jesus tells us “leads to life”.

Sit for about 3-5 minutes in prayer. Ask Jesus: “Where do I have room to grow as His follower?” Sit for another 3-5 minutes and ask the Lord what steps you can take to truly grow in holiness.
