13th Sunday in Ordinary Time

R. You are my inheritance, O Lord.

Written by Will Hickl

For me, sometimes I don’t appreciate how awesome ordinary time is, because the word ordinary has a connotation of being dull.  But, after weeks of extraordinary Easter celebration, this psalm is a powerful one to enter into ordinary time with.

How many of us are intrigued with the royal family? How many TV shows or movies have we seen depicting the past and present kings and queens of various foreign countries? I think it’s safe to say that we have all thought about how cool it would be to be in such a lineage, and imagine what it’d be like to be royalty.  What is great about this psalm is that it reminds us that we are part of an amazing lineage, and we are called to be priest prophet and king (or queen). Our inheritance is the kingdom of God!

The verses themselves are pretty powerful as well. Just sit with these phrases, let these truths wash over you, and try to remain in them this week. I have emphasized the verses that are speaking to me.

Keep me, O God, for in you I take refuge;
I say to the LORD, “My Lord are you.
O LORD, my allotted portion and my cup,
you it is who hold fast my lot.”

I bless the LORD who counsels me;
even in the night my heart exhorts me.
I set the LORD ever before me;
with him at my right hand I shall not be disturbed.

Therefore my heart is glad and my soul rejoices,
my body, too, abides in confidence
because you will not abandon my soul to the netherworld,
nor will you suffer your faithful one to undergo corruption.

You will show me the path to life,
fullness of joys in your presence,
the delights at your right hand forever.

Do we believe our inheritance is as real as a modern royal family?  Do we trust that God wants to provide us with everything we could ever imagine?
