Divine Mercy Sunday

R. Give thanks to the Lord for he is good, his love is everlasting.

Written by Francis Cabildo

One of the first things my wife and I hope and try to model for our children is to say “thank you”.  Usually though, we say thank you to someone because they’ve done something kind for us or have given us a gift of some kind.  But today’s response is something different.

The psalmist is calling us to give thanks not because of what God has or will do, but simply for who God is…good.  He is good.  That’s the reason to give thanks.  God’s goodness and God’s love.

This love, though, is not some romantic feeling.  The psalm is speaking of God’s hesed - according to the theologian John Oswalt, this love is “…a completely undeserved kindness and generosity”.  This love is full of action not just an emotion or feeling.  It is a love that is not fleeting and is forever, everlasting. (say with the Sandlot in mind 😂 )

So today we are reminded to give thanks regardless of our life’s circumstance or predicament.  Whether we are in a place of victory and peace, or a season of defeat, sadness and loss, we can be confident that God’s unfailing love, His hesed, is with you forever!  So give thanks!
